Apartheid's legacy of institutionalized racism has left a lasting impact on South Africa's national identity, including its education system. After nearly 50 years of separate and unequal educational policies that limited black South Africans' roles in society, the nation continues to struggle with how to overcome such an unjust era in education. How was this system implemented? What kinds of discrimination did it facilitate? Did it face resistance? Have there been attempts at education reform since the end of apartheid? What's next for South Africa in its journey toward democratization and equality?
